If you are like me, then you may have found yourself asking what abortion actually is. There are people all around us with big opinions about what abortion is and what it isn’t.
Is it healthcare?
Is it ending a life?
Is it moral?
Is it each person’s individual and private choice?
Is it constitutional or beneficial to society?
Is it really anyone else’s business to decide what abortion is or isn’t?
With all of these questions hovering around us, it can be hard to cut through the static and actually find information on what abortion is and what it isn’t. Part One and Part Two of this article will hopefully help to shed some light on what abortion actually is and aid you in your search for the truth as you form your own opinion on abortion. The dictionary defines the word ABORT this way, “To bring to a premature end because of a problem or fault.”
The dictionary defines the word ABORT this way:
“To bring to a premature end because of a problem or fault.”
Abortion is the action of this definition.
Abortion is the action of this definition. Meaning, that abortion is the act of bringing something to a premature end because of a problem or fault. We can use the term abortion for many things: abort a plan or mission, abort a relationship or business endeavor, abort a human life.
The very definition of abortion is dealing with prematurely ending something. Prematurely means to end something before it comes into the full measure of what it was originally intended to be. For something to be premature means that it has not yet reached maturity, indicating that there was a predetermined plan for that thing or activity to reach full maturity. There has to be a benchmark of what it looks like for that activity, thing, or person to be considered mature in order for something to be considered premature, meaning that it failed to meet the predetermined benchmark of maturity.
In regards to human life, the standard of what is considered mature is largely based on age, action or choices made, and physical size. Someone is mature when they have grown physically to be considered an adult human being. Legally someone is considered mature at the age of 18, they become a legal adult reaching the full maturity of what the law requires to be considered mature. Emotionally and relationally someone is mature when they begin to make wise and compassionate choices on their own about their life and relationships that bring benefit to themselves, others, and the society of which they are a part. Since there is a socially and lawfully accepted standard of what it means to be a mature human being, then anything that does not grow to reach that standard would be considered premature.
Since there is a socially and lawfully accepted standard of what it means to be a mature human being, then anything that does not grow to reach that standard would be considered premature.
In regards to a human life, if that person does not grow to reach the age and actions of maturity then that person would be considered to be in a premature state. If someone’s life is ended before they are able to reach age 18, or become a mature part of society, then we consider their life to have ‘ended prematurely’. For example, an 8 year old who falls victim to a tragic accident and dies as a result would be said to have had a life that “ended prematurely” or was “aborted”. A child’s life that has ended prematurely is never looked at as a positive thing. Most often, if something or someone’s life is ended prematurely, it is viewed as a negative thing.
The definition of abortion explains that when something ends prematurely, it would be fitting to say that it had been aborted. The definition goes one step further to say that abortion is when something is ended prematurely due to it having a fault or problem with it. Abortion happens as a result of determining that someone or something has a problem with it, so it must be ended sooner than originally intended in order to correct that problem. For example, if a mission is planned out by a branch of the military but it is then “aborted”, that typically happens because a problem is discovered with the mission so it must be ended prematurely (sooner than originally intended).
The same is true for what abortion means in regards to a human life that is aborted in the womb of a woman. Abortion happens because a person who is living inside of the womb is determined to have a problem or fault with them. Typically the fault is not a physical ailment or disease but rather an accusation of a problem that that person in the womb creates for the person carrying the baby or that person’s family.
Reasons such as, “the baby came at the wrong time,” “the mother can’t afford to raise a child,” “the father doesn’t want the baby,” and on and on. The fault that the baby is determined to carry is the fault of causing some type of problem for the people around that baby. Due to that problem, the baby’s life is ended prematurely. In the case of aborting a baby, the “premature ending” is the ending of that child’s life because a fault or problem was found with that child. Most often, the fault or problem is not that there is something wrong with the baby or that, if left to grow into maturity, they would not actually reach the state of maturity. More often, the problem that the baby causes is a fault or problem for the parents and people to whom the baby belongs. Therefore, a life is “ended prematurely” due to a problem or fault that is determined to affect the lives of the parents if that baby were to grow into full maturity. In order to avoid the problem that is created in the life of the parents of the baby, the baby is aborted. The baby’s existence “ends prematurely” in order to avoid the problem that was created for their parents by their conception.
After a quick study of the definition of abortion we can better define abortion as ending the life of an unborn baby prematurely because their conception is perceived as causing a fault or issue in the life or lives of their parents and others.
