What is Abortion? Part 2: The Types and Act of Abortion

Writer's picture: Abort Ignorance MTAbort Ignorance MT

The abortion procedure occurs when the mom of an unborn baby ends the pregnancy. There are several different ways to cause the baby to be aborted. Please check out our article from last week that explains what abortion is by clicking here.

Which abortion procedure is chosen is based largely on the gestational age of the baby and how various abortion procedures are performed has evolved over time. This article will outline the three current and most common abortion procedures:

  • Medication Abortion

  • Suction Abortion

  • Dilation and Evacuation Abortion

As I began to learn about these procedures, a supernatural light was shed on my lack of understanding of what is truly happening to the unborn baby during these procedures. There was a time in life when, if I had been faced with an unplanned pregnancy, I would have seriously considered having one of these procedures done. Since learning about the details of what exactly happens when a woman undergoes an abortion, I no longer question if I would ever elect to have an abortion procedure. I know that I would not choose to have an abortion because the science is just all too clear in regards to the loss that is actually taking place when an abortion is performed.

Seeing how these procedures affect the growth of the child inside the womb, I know that I would not be able to endure that loss. As you read through these brief descriptions, I believe the same, "Oh, wow!" moment that happened for me will happen for you.

It is extremely eye opening to learn about the inner workings of these procedures because it shows the reality of what is happening to the unborn baby and brings truth to the loss that the mother is actually experiencing as she undergoes an abortion of any kind.

It is extremely eye opening to learn about the inner workings of these procedures because it shows the reality of what is happening to the unborn baby and brings truth to the loss that the mother is actually experiencing as she undergoes an abortion of any kind. I have included some graphic but very clear videos depicting each procedure in hopes it will help to clarify each type of abortion procedure for you, as it did for me.

Medication Abortion

A medication abortion occurs when drugs (medication) are used to bring about an abortion. Medication abortions are more common than surgical abortions and are typically performed by administering a two-drug combination: mifepristone (mifeprex) followed by misoprostol. Medication abortions can be performed up to 10-11 weeks gestational age of the baby.

Here is what happens:

  1. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone essential for a healthy pregnancy. Given as the first abortion pill, this drug cuts off blood supply and nutrients to the developing embryo (the unborn baby).

  2. Misoprostol is then taken as the second half of the abortion pill, this pill causes the uterus to deliver the unborn baby. In short, misoprostol induces early labor.

Together, these medicines work to stop the growth of the unborn baby before inducing labor. The mother of the baby then delivers the child and this ends the pregnancy. The classic symptoms of miscarriage occur during a medication abortion, including:

  • Severe abdominal pain or cramping (labor pains)

  • Bleeding or severe spotting

  • Delivery of the baby who is in the embryo stage at this point in the pregnancy

Suction Abortion

Suction abortion (also called vacuum aspiration) is the most common type of in-clinic surgical abortion. The cervix is expanded using local anesthetic and surgical dilation tools. A medical vacuum tool is then used to suction the baby, amniotic fluid, and placenta out of the uterus. This type of abortion is usually performed up to 14 weeks gestational age of the baby. In Montana, abortion procedures are performed up to 21 weeks and 6 days.

Dilation and Evacuation Abortion

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is another kind of in-clinic surgical abortion procedure. In this procedure the mother of an unborn baby is given something that will dilate the cervix over 1-2 days. At the time of the abortion the woman has to receive local anesthesia, conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Her cervix is then opened with dilation tools. A suction tool then removes all of the amniotic fluid from the uterus. Last, clamp tools are used to dismember the unborn baby, thus completing this type of abortion procedure. This form of abortion can be used for any unborn child that is 16 weeks or later (depending on local laws). In Montana, abortion procedures like this one are performed up to 21 weeks and 6 days.

These are the three main types of abortions that a mother may undergo when she ends her pregnancy. I hope that this information has helped you as it has helped me.
